News INTERACTIVE SIGN INGRES Another key publisher joins the Interactive Open Source team COMPANIES IN DARK ABOUT DEDUPLICATION New Acronis survey reveals A I ngres, the leading open source database management company, has signed a UK distribution agreement with Interactive Ideas. Interactive Ideas has maintained a long and profitable partnership with Red Hat for over a decade and has witnessed a steady increase in interest in not only Red Hat solutions but open source technologies in general. There is no doubt that the economic downturn has spurred innovation, said Interactive Ideas managing director Mike Trup. As organisations look to reduce costs without sacrificing on innovation, open source has emerged as a vehicle for businesses to compete in the new economy. Our reseller community has seen increased interest in technology that not only has open source as its foundation, but is also technologically superior with a proven pedigree. Red Hat, and now Ingres, fulfils this need. Resellers are already recognising the value of having enterprise-ready, open-source solutions within their portfolios. Ingres is available at a fraction of the price of proprietary solutions, and is backed by the development power of the open source community, said Nigel Wright, sales director at Abtech. Our customers appreciate the option to reduce capital expenditure in these challenging times, without sacrificing security or performance. The partnership announcement with Interactive Ideas follows the recent launch of the Ingres Development Stack for Jboss Enterprise Middleware, the first-ever fully pre-assembled bundle that combines Ingres Database with Red Hats Jboss Developer Studio and Jboss Enterprise Application Platform. Since the launch of the Ingres Development Stack for Jboss, we have seen a rise in interest from organisations looking to move to full-fledged open source strategy, said Steve Shine, Ingres executive vice president of operations. Through technology partners such as Red Hat and distribution partners such as Interactive Ideas, we are making proven, mature open source technology and leading edge developments available to enterprises through a wider channel. http://www.testdriveint RED HAT RAISES BAR WITH ENTERPRISE LINUX 5.4 Calling it the next generation of virtualization technology, Red Hat has launched the fourth update to its Enterprise Linux 5. R ed Hat Enterprise Linux 5.4 has just been launched. This latest iteration of the well-known and market-leading distribution includes several updates here are the key ones... There have been optimizations for Intel Xeon Processor 5500 Series platforms and AMD Istanbul platforms. In addition, network advancements include Generic Receive Offload (GRO) to leverage new processing components in advanced network adapters by off-loading portions of the receive stack. Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) performance enhancements and hardware support are also included, along with device- driver enhancements ranging from disk, network and graphics to OFED InfiniBand drivers. In addition, the Systemtap performance monitoring toolset offers support for profiling and monitoring C++ applications and includes static kernel tracepoints to simplify performance observation for the highest-profile kernel subsystems. Scott Crenshaw, vice president of platform business unit at Red Hat, said: Red Hat Enterprise Linux plays a significant role in Red Hats virtualisation strategy, and the availability of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.4 is a significant step in our delivery of virtualisation to the market. With this update release, Red Hat Enterprise Linux aims to raise the bar once again, offering compelling software technologies with impressive quality and reliability. http://www.testdriveint ccording to a recent survey carried out by data backup and disaster recovery experts Acronis, the majority of UK businesses are not employing data deduplication despite its clear benefits. Ninety-one per cent of the 105 IT resellers surveyed by Acronis said that less than half of their customers are employing deduplication, with two thirds (62 per cent) stating that the minority (under 10 per cent) of their customers are using the technology. A third saw the cost of deduplication as the biggest barrier to entry, while nearly 100 per cent of those questioned (98 per cent) said that that if deduplication was affordable then their customers would invest in it, highlighting the misconception surrounding the affordability of deduplication solutions. David Blackman, general manager of Acronis UK & Ireland, said: Data deduplication is currently a hot topic in the storage industry, but many customers feel like it is out of their reach. It can cut storage requirements by up to 90 per cent by eliminating replicated files or identical blocks of data, therefore dramatically reducing costs. However, deduplication is often perceived as an expensive technology to adopt and implement, reserved for large organisations and usually requiring additional hardware. With over a third of partners stating that their customers do not know enough about deduplication to deploy the technology, there is a clear need for the market to educate end users about the cost and storage savings it can bring to an organisation. In addition, deduplication can save network bandwidth as the amount of data transferred over a network to a target storage location can be cut by 10 to 20 times especially relevant to SMBs who sometimes have limited bandwidth. Acronis has recently launched Acronis Backup & Recovery 10, a portfolio of disaster recovery products with modular software deduplication offered at one of the industrys lowest price points. It offers data deduplication without the need to purchase additional hardware, putting the technology easily within reach of SMBs. The deduplication option is available from as little as 16 per PC or 135 per server. http://www.testdriveint www.testdriveinteractiv 0208 805 2999 Autumn 2009 er resell uide g solution p 6 Red Hat Virtualisation Discover the benefits of the virtualisation technology in-built in Red Hats Advanced Platform p 21 Opportunities p 18 Test Drive in a downturn Product Locator Find out why the IT sector is emerging fit and strong from the damaging rece Spend less, do more with JBoss. 4 earn how in our JBoss Enterprise L Application webinar series. www.jboss.com/promo/JEA Copyright 2009 Red Hat, Inc.
