Q&A Solarwinds The Failover Engine Adam Nash SolarWinds Product Manager, Interactive Ideas SolarWinds have now implemented a tried and tested robust failover module to the Orion suite taking the solution to the next level as a true enterprise class monitoring solution. Performance Monitor NPM, the Network Configuration Manager and Application Monitor are chargeable failover modules. The Failover Engines for all other modules are free of charge. Q: What kind of technology is the Failover Engine built on? A: The FoE is designed using Neverfail technology. Neverfail also provide resiliency for VMware and Microsoft so this is a tried and tested solution that works data that was being collected by one of the modules (Application, NetFlow or Network Config Mgr) would get missed. The new Failover Engine covers all of the modules that SolarWinds provide for the Orion suite. It uses replication technology so that it replicates the core monitoring platform down to the IP address of the servers so that your network does not need to be reconfigured when the failover solution takes over. The switch is seamless. All data is replicated to the backup server and then when the primary server fails the backup server takes over within 2 minutes. Q: What is the Failover Engine (FoE)? A: The Orion Failover Engine (FoE) monitors the health of your Orion server to ensure you never lose network performance visibility. If something should happen to your primary Orion server, Orion FoE automatically fails over to a remote server. The passive failover server assumes the full identity of the Orion server and assumes all monitoring, alerting, reporting, and data collection responsibility. Orion FoEs switchover is an automatic, seamless process to ensure Orion data collection continuity and is completely transparent to the user. Orion FoE is an ideal disaster recovery solution for networks that demand high availability and performance. Q: What type of environment would benefit from the FoE? A: Typically we are seeing this solution implemented by customers in environments that demand high availability. This is typically the banking, telecoms, health, manufacturing and Police sectors where the network is critical to the business functioning properly. Q: Does the FoE cover the whole suite of Orion products? A: The FoE has been designed to offer failover for not just the Orion Network Performance Monitor but also the modules that are installed on the Orion server. This means that regardless of the modules you have implemented they will be covered by the FoE. SolarWinds offer Failover for the whole Orion suite but only the Network Orion FoE is an ideal disaster recovery solution for networks that demand high availability and performance in high end, enterprise environments. Neverfail also provide a failover solution for the underlying SQL database that all of your Orion data is stored in. This means you have complete peace of mind knowing that you have no single point of failure for your monitoring platform. Q So what is the difference between the new Failover Engine and the old Hot Standby Engine? A: The Hot Standby Engine (The old DR/resiliency solution for the SolarWinds Orion platform) was purely there to take over when either Orion or one of the Polling Engines failed. This meant that any Meet Adam Name Adam Nash Job Title SolarWinds Product Manager Tel 020 8805 2999 Email adamninteractiveideas. www.testdriveinteractiv 0208 805 2999 14 Issue 1: 2011 er resell uide g solution INSIDEÓ Discover the latest technologies for physical, virtual and cloud based IT infrastructures p21 RHEL 6 Interactive p16 New: Acronis p10 pull-out guide sign Cyberoam Online back-up Your complete guide to this innovative new Enterprise Linux system Get t Introduction Marketing Director Michael Breeze Thanks to Acronis, Red Hat, Solarwinds, Novell, Enterprise DB, Cyberoam, Incontinuum, Adam Nash, Walli Datoo, Shane Herath, Andy Miles and Karen Williams.
