With the 4.0 release, were taking these products two steps further with Auto-Scan Removable Drives, Full Windows 7 & Server 2008 R2 Support, Boot Cleaner Native 64-bit, Scan Extensions in Firefox (equivalent to Browser Helper Objects), Scan more archive file types, Improved AP, Improved Email AV, Improved Rootkit, and No more Windows FPs. We have been hearing about the multi-Site Service, what can you tell our readers about it? The major improvement to the entire 4.0 Enterprise family is the Multi-Site Service. This is an extremely flexible feature, allowing admins to configure their installation to suit their network topology, taking into account remote offices, local offices, remote admins, admins with different privileges and so on... a Chief Sys Admin at HQ can control and configure all lower level activity, while local admins can only access their local installation. Sounds like you thought of everything the admin might need. The design goal was to create a system architecture that would work for a small company with only one site, to a multinational corporation with dozens of sites throughout the world. The VIPRE Site Service is particularly helpful for Managed Service Providers, and they can run multiple sites, one for each customer, or just install one Site Service and control access for each customer admin. How easy is Vipre 4.0 to install or upgrade? In tests, weve found that experienced admins familiar with 3.1 adjust very rapidly to 4.0 Theres a brief period of getting familiar with the new layout, and once theyve got that, using 4.0 is a breeze. A new user, unfamiliar with VIPRE, might take a little longer to get familiar with all main features, but again, once they understand the basic layout, its a snap. Finally, briefly tell us how a reseller can benefit from reselling Vipre 4.0. There are great opportunities to grow revenues and margin. There is plenty of scope to offer competitive upgrade pricing to current anti-virus users unhappy with their existing solution. What do you see as the major improvements in the 4.0 release of VIPRE? The main improvement in our 4.0 release, and the most obvious for customers, is the addition of the Firewall to VIPRE. Weve taken the core of Sunbelt Personal Firewall 4.6 and re-written it with full 64-bit compatibility and complete support for Windows 7, and plugged that into VIPRE. Is that a normal procedure, to totally rewrite the code? Its not typical. But VIPRE was purposely written to be easily expandable with additional features, and the Firewall essentially acts as a plug-in module that is fully compatible within the entire VIPRE architecture. Within the Firewall, we have a number of technologies including a Bi-Directional Firewall, HIPS (Host Intrusion Protection System), IDS (Intrusion Detection Systems), Web Filtering, Ad Blocking, Bad URL Blocking, Using ThreatTrack Data, and Anti-Phishing. Thats an impressive list of features. Break them down for us... The Bi-Directional Firewall is pretty self-explanatory. Our HIPS technology prevents programs from injecting code into other programs. IDS uses a set of rules to block specific attacks by matching an observed behavior against the rule set. One of the most commonly known IDS rule types is SNORT(r) rules. Our Web Filtering, Ad Blocking and Bad URL Blocking are designed to stop specific types of internet activity from accessing known bad sites to preventing known bad advertising sources from displaying links, to stopping specific types of web apps from running.
